Job Description:

The American University in Cairo Libraries and Learning Technologies (LLT) seeks an experienced cataloging / metadata librarian to provide leadership in a period of change in the library and university. The AUC Library is a significant supplier of original Arabic catalog records to WorldCat, and of Arabic name and Islamic subject headings to the LC.

Reporting to the Director for Collections, the successful candidate will have overall management of and quality control in the Cataloging/Metadata Services Department. Sets priorities, allocates resources, and develops plans, policies and practices within the department; administers operations for original and copy cataloging of print, multi-media resources, electronic monographs, serials, and databases using MARC or metadata formats; administers end-processing functions; provides leadership for a multi-cultural, knowledgeable staff in an environment of anticipated change; creates a positive work environment.

Requirements:

The candidate must have an ALA-accredited MLS, excellent oral and written English, and 3-5 years’ progressively responsible experience in design and maintenance of cataloging workflow. Knowledge of the cataloging and related modules of Innovative Millennium is required. A second Masters degree, working knowledge of other languages, and experience in a multicultural environment are highly desirable but not mandatory.

Reporting to the Head, Technical Services, the successful candidate will work with librarians in Ekstrom Library’s Technical Services Division (including Current Periodicals) to select and implement special projects, and play a significant role in managing the overall operations of Technical Services. This position interfaces and coordinates with other serials units as the Libraries’ print subscriptions continue to migrate to electronic subscriptions. This position also includes original cataloging of continuing resources. The Serials/Acquisitions Librarian works with Collection Development concerning vendors, ordering, and payment issues. This position will also participate in research and creative work, and service to the libraries, university and the profession.

Principal duties:

Additional activities include monitoring of trials, platform changes,

obtaining price quotes, product upgrades, collection analysis, and other

data assessment. Develops expertise with emerging technologies and

maintains awareness and engagement with trends and developments in

e-resource acquisitions and management. Participates in and contributes

to review of e-resource workflows. Collaborates in the implementation of

best practices, ongoing pursuit of process improvements, and

development/dissemination of policies, guidelines, and procedures.

Participates on committees, task forces, and special projects related to

POSITION:  Reporting to the Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services, the Asst. Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services is responsible for initiating and directing authority control, bibliographic quality control, and database problem resolution to insure bibliographic and authority records meet local and national standards, working closely with other library faculty/staff to establish and document relevant policies, procedures, and efficient workflows; Supervises, trains, and evaluates copy-cataloging and database maintenance staff ; Acts as a liaison to authority and database enrichment vendors and manages the loading and quality control for all vendor supplied records and data; Works with Metadata Services and Digital Library Initiatives to oversee metadata quality control of digital collections and establish  relevant policies, procedures, and workflows; Participates in original cataloging of all formats and metadata creation activities in the library as needed ;Networks, collaborates and actively participates in local, regional, national, or international organizations regarding issues in librarianship, cataloging, database maintenance and authority control services; Serves on/participates in University and Library committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library science, or an ALA-approved foreign equivalent; Two years of original cataloging experience.  Professional understanding and knowledge of cataloging procedures and principles including but not limited to: AACR2R, LCRIs, LC classification, LCSH, MARC21 bibliographic and authority formats; Professional understanding and knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemas, standards, best practices, and their applications, such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA Core, MODS, METS, etc.; Working knowledge of bibliographic utilities and integrated library systems and familiarity with authority and database enrichment vendors services
Prior successful supervisory experience; ability to motivate staff and set priorities; Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in a service and production-oriented environment, and adapt to a fast paced rapidly changing environment; Ability to plan and implement routines and processes that ensure optimum production, and monitor projects through to completion in a cost-effective manner ; Demonstrated  ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with diverse constituents ;Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills ; Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages (Spanish preferred).  Desired:  Experience managing authority control processes and/or vendor services; Experience batch loading and editing bibliographic records, using Millennium (Innovative Interfaces) and/or third party software, such as MarcEdit, preferred ; Experience developing macros and/or scripts to enhance productivity.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: MLS from an ALA accredited library program.  Experience (professional or non-professional) in an academic library using an integrated library system.  Must have experience with current computer operating systems and a demonstrated ability to formulate and implement plans, goals and objectives regarding the development and maintenance of library applications software.   Candidate must have a strong customer service orientation with advanced analytical and problem solving skills to assess and respond to administrative/management issues and technical challenges.  They must be able to work in a team-based environment and with all levels of staff.  Candidate must have awareness of technological trends, issues and accepted practices in areas of responsibility; a technical aptitude to learn new products and grasp new techniques quickly.  Additionally must have demonstrated organizational and communication skills.  Preferred:   Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.  Knowledge of open URL resolvers, federated search engines, CSS and SQL.
