The University of California, Davis, invites nominations and applications for the position of University Librarian. The General Library of the University of California, Davis, is a member of the Association of Research Libraries and a major educational and scholarly resource, operating as an integral part of the University while recognizing obligations to a wider public, particularly the people of California. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor and serving as a member of the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors, the University Librarian provides overall leadership of the UC Davis General Library in support of University research, instruction, patient care, and community outreach .

 

The colleges of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Letters and Science; the schools of Education, Management, Medicine, Nursing, and Veterinary Medicine; and the UC Davis Health System are all served by the UC Davis General Library, both in Davis and in Sacramento. The Library houses comprehensive, world-class agricultural and veterinary medicine collections, especially in viticulture and enology, environmental sciences and ecology, and comparative medicine as well as broadly based humanities, social sciences, and sciences collections. The Special Collections feature a diverse range of topics from agricultural sciences to Western Americana to photographs of rural California and Oregon and a rich University Archives showcasing the campus’s 100-year history.

 

The UC Davis General Library is an active collaborative contributor to the highly successful University of California collective of campus libraries and the California Digital Library. Together, the University of California libraries and California Digital Library provide state-of-the-art services, such as the eScholarship, open-access, scholarly publishing platform and UC Publishing Services, and access to a wealth of books and journals (~33 million titles), electronic journals (~34,400 titles), 180,000 digital images via Calisphere, 20,000+ special collection guides via Online Archive of California, and over 422 million web files captured by the Web Archiving Service .

The University Librarian also represents the Davis campus in systemwide discussions regarding collaborative ventures and policy development. Reporting to the Director for Resources and Services, the Systems Librarian evaluates, recommends, implements, and manages a variety of applications for remote electronic access to information resources and services.   The incumbent participates on the technical team responsible for all aspects of the Library’s information infrastructure.  Specific duties include: planning, budgeting, coordination, and implementation of technical projects, maintenance, and updates; assistance with development of web-based training and support products; staff and user training; participation in the design and maintenance of the Library Information Network (http://lib.fit.edu); assistance with development of communications for end users about the uses and benefits of tools and applications; integration of information from different systems into a single user interface; administrative reporting; work with technical and Library teams to implement complex applications; development of  policies, procedures and documentation; system and database security and integrity; troubleshooting functional problems and provision of ongoing functional support. 

Minimum qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS or background in computer information systems with extensive SIRSI experience in an academic library; outstanding verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; prefer two or more years of recent technical experience in an integrated library systems environment; required knowledge of MARC bibliographic formats; two years experience in database maintenance; experience with digitization management systems, preferably ContentDM; current SIRSI training experience; and UNIX experience. Job Summary
The Librarian serves in a leadership role to coordinate the acquisition, activation, and maintenance of library resources. The Librarian has primary responsibility for acquisition and electronic resources management workflows, including quality control. The incumbent works closely with Library staff in all departments to facilitate the identification, selection, and fiscal control of resources while managing the metadata records-keeping and database maintenance required to make, and keep, resources accessible. The Librarian develops policies, procedures and workflows to optimize the experience of customers accessing Library resources online.

Job Duties
A. Acquisitions

1. Collaborates closely with Collections Management and Business office to identify, select, and obtain library resources while maintaining fiscal control

2. Coordinates licensing, ordering, registration, and renewal of resources

3. Maintains consistent and accurate records system for administrating acquisitions processes and resources

4. Oversees order and bibliographic records creation/ingest within the integrated library system and other information discovery and access tools. Creates original metadata records in a variety of standard formats as required

5. Leads the materials ordering and receiving work team with primary responsibility for designing workflows, training team members, and quality control for business processes

6. Serves as primary vendor contact and accounts administrator

B. Electronic resources and database management

1. Manages link resolver mechanisms including activation and maintenance of holdings thresholds

2. Troubleshoots problems with electronic resources arising from subscription, licensing, or access-related technical issues in collaboration with public services.

3. Works with vendors to resolve access problems

4. Designs, develops, and maintains electronic resource management (ERM) system for managing administrative metadata related to serials subscriptions

5. Performs regular database maintenance tasks within integrated library system, link resolver system, and serials management systems

6. Identifies and implements new approaches to electronic resource linking and accessibility

7. Organizes, analyzes, and prepares resource usage data for acquisitions, collection development, and institutional reporting

8. Creates and maintains authority and holdings metadata according to international standards and stays abreast of standards development

9. Provides internal training and information on authority and holdings metadata best practices and electronic access to resources

10. Manages projects involving electronic resources including the integration of outsourced data into existing management systems

C. Professional and administrative

1. Retains expert-level knowledge on acquisitions and electronic access standards and workflows

2. Participates in developments to adapt the traditional library environment to evolving technologies, user expectations, and business opportunities

3. Reviews functional requirements for metadata systems, recommends changes and early implmentation strategies where required

4. Contributes to evaluation of staff involved in resource acquisition and maintenance

5. Attends and participates in professional/technical conferences and meetings

6. Participates in various Library meetings and activities

7. Performs other duties as required

Basic Qualifications
* Masters degree from ALA accredited institution.

* Experience with acquisitions and electronic resource management systems.

* Skill with link resolver administration and troubleshooting.

* Facility creating MARC bibliographic, authority, and holdings metadata.

* Serials cataloging experience according to CONSER best practices.

* Solid understanding of integrated library systems.

* Experience with batch manipulation of large metadata files.

* Demonstrated problem-solving, work-flow analysis, and project leadership skills.

* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications
* Leadership/supervisory experience.

* Experience with metadata management systems currently in use at Caltech Library (Innovative Interfaces Millenium, YBP/GOBI approval system, OCLC Connexion, Ebsconet, OttoSerials, Ex Libris SFX).

* Familiarity with non-MARC metadata schemes and evolving standards.

* Experience with administering proxy server.

* Basic-level proficiency with Unix/Linux, regular expressions, and web standards and technologies.

Position Summary: This position will hold a leadership role in organizing and providing access to the library’s extensive electronic resources collection, (e-books, journals, and databases). Reporting to the Collections Development Officer, this position will be responsible for all aspects of the life cycle of e-resources, including coordinating the purchasing, licensing, access, and maintenance of all electronic materials. He or she will be expected to work cooperatively with serials, acquisitions and other departments across the library.
