LAC is seeking a Head of the Cataloging Department  at an academic institution in New Orleans, LA.

Must have strong supervisory and cataloging background, preferably in an Academic environment. The Library is developing highly innovative technologies and is looking for someone who will bring enthusiasm, out-of-the-box thinking, and creativity to this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or its equivalent.
  • Must have at least 2 years of supervisory experience;
  • 2-3 years experience in an academic or research library with  2 years of original cataloging using an automated cataloging system (ILS) and OCLC’s World Cat.
  • Knowledge and experience using AACR2 Rev., LCRI, LCCS, LCSH, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic holdings and authority control.
  • Experience with cataloging digital resources, outsourcing cataloging, familiarity with Ex Libris Voyager and a working knowledge of metadata standards highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of at least one modern European language.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Detail-oriented, ability to work independently and in a team situation.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Perform original and complex copy cataloging in all formats and in all languages.
  • Supervise a staff of 4 catalog librarians and the Copy Cataloging Coordinator.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of cataloging functions including policy development, implementation and review in conjunction with catalog librarians and copy cataloging staff and non-technical services librarians.
  • Work with the Head of Systems, Head of Database Management and Head of Electronic Resources Management to edit and load MARC records obtained from vendors in the online catalog.
  • Hire new personnel in event of vacancies.

• Tenure-track faculty position, available September, 2010.

• This position is an 8-month academic year appointment, with an additional Spring or Summer appointment possible.

• Appointment at the Instructor rank requires an ALA-accredited library or information science degree. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank requires an ALA-accredited library or information service degree and 18 additional graduate credit hours and at least 3 years of professional library experience.

Position Description:

Eastern Michigan University Library is looking for an energetic librarian to fill the position of Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian. Primary responsibilities are to implement and maintain Electronic Resources Management software, maintain the library’s SFX OpenURL link resolver, manage a wide range of licensed electronic resources such as databases, journals, books and reference sources and serve as the functional supervisor of the Periodicals unit. The Periodicals unit includes two support staff members who maintain the library’s electronic, print and microform journal collections, update MARC21 serials holdings records, and provide patron assistance.

This librarian will play the lead role in maximizing patron access to serials and other electronic resources. This person will communicate with internal staff and external service providers to provide optimal access to electronic resources, troubleshoot online applications, resolve access problems, and monitor trends in electronic resource management, recommending new technologies and practices. In addition, this person will also share responsibilities and duties with the Systems Office including activities such as scripting, database updates, as well as gathering, aggregating, and manipulating statistics.

This position will contribute to the overall operation of the Technical Services Department, which is responsible for the functions of acquisitions, materials preparation, cataloging, serials control, interlibrary loan, government documents, and gifts processing.

Qualifications:

Required:

• ALA-accredited degree in library or information science.

• A commitment to meet established library criteria for promotion and tenure, including professional service and scholarly activity.

• Experience providing access to serials resources, both electronic and print.

• Experience supporting online databases and E-journal packages.

• Experience working with staff modules (Circulation, Acquisitions, etc.) of Voyager or a comparable ILS.

• Successful supervisory experience, preferably in an academic library.

• Excellent problem solving skills; ability to work well under pressure and demonstrated experience handling multiple priorities and/or projects.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment with staff at all levels and with people of diverse backgrounds

Preferred:

• Two years experience as a technical services librarian, preferably in an academic or research library.

• Experience working with vendors and/or providers of electronic resources.

• Experience with OpenURL link resolver software.

• Experience with programming or scripting languages (e.g. Perl, XSL, PHP, etc.) • Experience with and knowledge of an Electronic Resources Management system.

• Experience with data management software.

• Strong computer skills, including a demonstrated ability to assist library personnel with improving their efficiency in utilizing library software.

• A second graduate degree.

Preston Library at the Virginia Military Institute seeks a Head of Technical Services to lead its technical and automation services. The successful candidate will be a creative leader who thrives on exploring and implementing new technologies to support the library and the Institute’s missions. This position will lead an initiative to explore and implement a catalog “discovery layer” and Library 2.0/Web 2.0 initiatives.Position and Duties: Reporting to the Head Librarian, the successful candidate will oversee hardware and software specific to the library: web services; the library’s ILS (Innovative Interfaces Millennium); develop and implement new and innovative technologies and services; plan and implement upgrades; represent the library’s information technology interests within the Institute. He/She will also be responsible for planning and implementing library technical policies and procedures; build, train, and supervise a transitioning Technical Services Department, which includes cataloging and acquisitions, within the Library team; work with IT and other technology areas and departments. 

Required Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in library science, information science, or computer science; professional experience in implementing library technologies in an academic setting; have a high level of technical expertise in technologies related to library systems and web development; experience designing and maintaining web pages, with advanced knowledge and understanding of website technologies, including in-depth knowledge of one or more markup or scripting languages (e.g. Perl, PHP, HTML, ASP, Javascript, etc.), experience with databases (e.g. MySQL); Linux and Windows system administration; experience with open-source software; fluency with current and emerging library technologies; outstanding written and oral communication skills; outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member and independently; ability to solve problems and manage projects.

Cataloger with experience working with legal materials
