The National Library of Medicine has an opening for an Acquisitions Librarian in the Serial Records Section of the Technical Services Division. The Serial Records Section is responsible for acquiring and managing over 20,000 print and electronic subscriptions for biomedical serials from over 150 different countries in support of NLM’s mission to build and preserve a comprehensive biomedical collection. The Section is comprised of two units, staffed by 9 librarians, 1 technical information specialist and 7 library technicians. Duties of this position include a variety of acquisitions activities for serials in all formats via a number of different procurement mechanisms. The incumbent will perform tasks related to serials acquisitions, invoicing and receiving in the Voyager ILS as well as maintenance of electronic resource data in the Meridian ERMS. The Serial Records Section is organized around 5 geographic area teams each led by an acquisitions librarian. Librarians are responsible for planning the work of the group and providing guidance and training to staff on the team.

The Electronic & Continuing Resources team is part of Technical Services in the Content Division, which also includes Preservation, Digitization Services, and Storage. S/he will lead initiatives and share responsibility with team members for making accessible and maintaining electronic and continuing resources, including electronic books, journals, databases and will work closely with colleagues in the five Emory libraries in the management of licensed, purchased, and Open Access electronic resources. The new librarian will participate in the implementation, management and assessment of electronic and continuing resources using Sirsi/Dynix’s Unicorn system and ExLibris’ Metalib, SFX, and Verde systems in a highly collaborative environment. S/he will become the lead and point person for one or more of these systems.

The Electronic Resources (ER) Librarian coordinates the acquisition, access, administration, support, and evaluation/monitoring of electronic information resources under the supervision of the Associate Director (AD) for Library Technical Services. This position works collaboratively with library staff to develop, catalog, and maintain the electronic resources collection for Neumann Library. Works with vendors to set up trials and training sessions, resolve pricing and licensing issues, as well as access and content issues. Works closely with the AD for Public Services, the AD for Library Digital Services, and the Systems Coordinator in the performance of the electronic resources management duties. Stays abreast of current trends and new technologies for managing electronic resources and advocates for their adoption when appropriate. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Required: Degree from ALA accredited program in library or information science; Evidence of 5+ years progressively responsible administrative experience in Technical Services; demonstrated leadership and management skills; strong information technology skills; demonstrated ability to establish, monitor, evaluate overall operations of Technical Services; experience with integrated library systems and OCLC; applied knowledge of standards and best practices for cataloging and metadata; monograph and serials acquisition; experience with data reporting and analytical problem-solving; effective oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and in collaboration with others; evidence of research, scholarly and/or creative activity; continuing commitment to professional development; and the ability to meet the requirements of tenure and promotion; familiarity with new practices, trends, developments, and standards in the Technical Services field. Preferred: Experience at a large academic library; experience with Voyager integrated library system; experience in negotiating and managing vendor contracts; reading knowledge of a foreign language; experience with XML and metadata schema.

Coordinates serials control, including renewal, financial payment and licensing of electronic resources. Trains staff and may teach in the information literacy program. Coordinates technical services with other library services and functions. Maintains interdepartmental communications with library personnel on two campuses, with academic libraries in the U.A.E., the region and internationally. Ensures technology is available and serves as appropriate tools for information access. Represents the library to the external community.
