The Electronic Resources/Serials Librarian will provide leadership for the selection, acquisition, assessment, and maintenance of abstracts and indexes, and scholarly, popular, and trade journals. Specific duties of the position: Collaborate with other library faculty to identify, research, and evaluate electronic and serial resources; Work collaboratively with library faculty and publisher/vendor representatives to organize electronic resource trials and schedule vendor training opportunities; Oversee the work of the serials staff; develop and manage workflows and assure timely processing and continuous access to electronic, print, and microform resources; Maintain the library’s list of electronic and serial resources; collaborate with other library faculty to address access issues and communicate content and/or interface changes; Maintain active engagement with colleagues in regional and statewide consortiums; Teach one course per year in a library-associated academic program. Demonstrated ability to teach and/or perform effectively, scholarly achievement or research, continued preparation and study, contribution to student growth and development, and service to the university and community are required for tenure and promotion.

Responsibilities: Assists with daily leadership and strategic planning for the library; coordinates the work of the division with public services and archives & special collections; evaluates and supervises technical services faculty and staff; encourages and facilitates the professional development of faculty and staff; serves as technical contact and library representative to the South Dakota Library Network; serves as subject bibliographer and library liaison in one or more academic disciplines; maintains a record of performance, scholarship, and service to ensure promotion and tenure. Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science; 5+ years experience in cataloging, serials, or acquisitions; supervisory experience with faculty or support staff; effective written and oral communication skills. Preferred: Second master’s or doctorate (required for tenure track as assistant professor or higher rank); demonstrated leadership ability in an academic research library; experience with integrated library systems such as Ex Libris/ALEPH; an understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing technical services in an academic research library demonstrated by a record of service, publications, or presentations.

The Head of Acquisitions is a creative and team-oriented professional who oversees acquisitions functions for an ARL-level library with an annual materials budget of approximately $6 million. This positions reports directly to the library’s Director of Technical Services and is oversees seven paraprofessional staff members. Responsibilities includes management of serials and monographs acquisitions, ordering and invoicing for digital resources, processing and tracking fund expenditures, vendor relations, and staff supervision. Acquisitions is a key function in the library and this department head works collaboratively with many other librarians outside the Technical Services Division including some 20 bibliographers for the general collections and those purchasing materials for special collections. The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is a rapidly changing environment and its Head of Acquisitions is expected to develop expertise with emerging technologies and lead and/or participate in innovative library projects.
