Digital Serials Integration Librarian

The George Washington University Medical Center’s Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library seeks a serials librarian with demonstrated collaborative and innovative skills to manage the acquisition, processing and utilization of print and electronic serials. The Digital Serials Integration Librarian will be instrumental in ensuring the success of a recent move from a predominantly print-based serials collection to one that is largely electronic. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in selection of a system for management and optimal utilization of electronic serials resources. The Digital Serials Integration Librarian reports to the Associate Director, Collection and Access Services, and is a member of the Collection and Access Services management team.

Duties and responsibilities include the following:
• Responsible for daily operations in the Serials Department:
- Ensures the quality and integrity of the serials acquisition and control modules in the integrated library system (Sirsi Unicorn) as well as management systems designed specifically for electronic journals.
- Monitors and maintains serial order and claim records for print titles
- Maintains serial orders for, and ongoing successful access to, electronic serial resources
- Manages the accuracy of all serial records in Serhold and ensures accurate linking of electronic journal titles in services such as Scopus, Ovid, and PubMed
- Oversees communication between the department and vendors, integrators, etc. and serves as contact to resolve problems when necessary
- Trains and supervises the Serials Manager and Bindery Assistant
- Oversees bindery operations in conjunction with the Serials Manager

• Responsible for education of users regarding successful utilization of electronic serials and outreach efforts to faculty members to ensure the integrity and maintenance of a high-quality journal collection. Responsible for staff training as necessary.

• Contributes knowledge to assess continued integration of electronic serials with the print collection and applies background to the successful delivery of maximum quality content to users.

• Collaborates with the Head of Cataloging and Reserves and the Electronic Resources/Instructional Librarian to ensure accurate reflection of serial title changes and serial format changes in the online catalog.

• Collaborates with the Electronic Resources/Instructional Librarian in negotiation for and licensing of electronic serials and assists with other e-resources as needed.

• Creates analyses of hybrid serials collection, budget and others as needed

• Participates in Collection Development committee as representative for serial resources.

• Serves on interdisciplinary library teams.

• Participates in the Library’s instructional program as appropriate.

• Maintains current knowledge of trends in librarianship, especially electronic resources, their impact and management issues. Provides leadership within the library on serials resources of both formats and their management.

• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic:
• Master’s degree in library or information science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program.
• 1-3 years experience in a library setting.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Experience with both print and electronic serials, and providing access to electronic serials through database and web-page maintenance (OpenURL linking, PubMed LinkOut and Links@Ovid).
• Experience with trends in libraries, especially the digital environment and effects of digitization within technical services and the library as a whole.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all library staff, and excellent oral (presentations, training workshops) and written (training materials, requested analyses, documentation) communication skills.
• Working experience with all applicable software/systems, particularly strong data analysis skills and ability to use Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheets for analysis.

Preferred:
• 2-3 years experience in a health sciences setting in an academic library.
• Experience with serials in both a print and electronic environment.
• Experience with Sirsi or other integrated library system, experience/knowledge of metadata.
• Experience with serials workflow from identification of items to patron access for both print and electronic journals/serials

The Drexel University Law Library solicits applications for the position of  Acquisitions Librarian.

The successful candidate is responsible for the daily operations related to ordering, receiving, and processing print and electronic legal and law related materials and for coordinating and monitoring related workflow matters within the library and with staff from the Drexel university library.  Specific responsibilities include identifying and acquiring all library materials, regardless of type or format, using firm orders, approval plans, and subscription agents and coordinating the processing of these materials by university library staff.  The successful candidate will use Innopac/Millennium to establish fund allocations monitor and track expenditures, provide budget planning analyses and budget projections. The successful candidate collaborates with the library’s staff and the staff of the university library to successfully carry out acquisition functions and is responsible for gathering, tracking, and communicating acquisitions pricing information to library director and maintaining acquisitions data, statistics, reports, policies, and procedures.

Depending upon experience, the Acquisitions Librarian may participate in reference and the library liaison program as well as in the library’s educational programming in which case occasional evening and weekend reference hours may be required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or equivalent (candidates with substantial relevant library experience and who are making substantial progress toward the completion of their degree also are encouraged to apply); experience
with acquisitions operations in an academic environment or a similar large or complex library setting; experience with integrated library systems, especially related to acquisition functions; familiarity with fund accounting and library budgeting practices; experience working with vendors and content providers, including book vendors, publishers, and library consortia; demonstrated knowledge of library acquisitions business practices.   Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be effective in working within a flat organizational structure.
