DUTIES:

The University of Baltimore Law Library seeks a serials management librarian. The position reports to the Assistant Director for Technical Services and supervises two full time Library Technicians. Duties will include coordinating the ordering, renewal, receipt, payment, check-in, claiming, bibliographic maintenance, weeding, and binding of serials of all formats, including GPO materials. The position is highly collaborative and interacts with other library staff to ensure public access, resolve complex problems, train staff, monitor and evaluate vendor performance, and perform special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Position requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and at least 3 years professional experience working in technical services to include experience in serials management, staff supervision, and familiarity with integrated library systems. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are a must. Experience in academic law library technical services operations, experience with Ex Libris Aleph 500 integrated library system, experience with a major bibliographic utility (e.g. OCLC), and knowledge of current cataloging rules, standards, practices and/or metadata are preferred. The selected candidate will have demonstrated supervisory abilities, the ability to learn quickly, take initiative, and problem solve, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as a team member in a high-demand and multi-tasking environment. Familiarity with database (e.g. ACCESS) and spreadsheet applications (e.g. EXCEL) preferred.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Manage and Supervise the Technical Services Team (50%)
a.      Oversee acquisitions, cataloging, serials, bindery, electronic resources, and government documents processing.
b.      Coordinate the exploration, evaluation, and implementation of innovations that will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of technical services operations, including but not limited to Electronic Resources Management Systems (ERMS), EDI implementation, and approval plans.
c.      Lead the team in establishing, reviewing, and carrying out service goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
d.      Supervise the Technical Services Team, including hiring, training, and evaluating team members.
e.      Assist technical services staff in developing technical competencies, e.g. cataloging standards, computer software.
f.      Serve as liaison to technical services units at the University of Minnesota University Libraries; specifically represent UMD Library through participation in ACG, CCG, and other committees.

2.  Oversee Access and Control of Materials (15%)
a.      Serve as the Technical Services expert user for Aleph Acquisitions, Serials, and Cataloging modules.
b.      Oversee maintenance of the UMD SFX and Serials Solutions knowledge bases.
c.      Serve as the OCLC coordinator.  Prepare OCLC semi-annual budget.
d.      Manage weeding and inventory projects.
e.      Manage future digitization projects.

3.  Co-manage the Library Collection Development Activities (15%)
a.      Participate in acquisition budget decision making.
b.      Monitor and report on acquisitions spending.
c.      Gather, prepare, and report library acquisitions, collection and usage statistics for all material types.
d.      Participate in the decision-making processes regarding the Library’s collections through active membership in the following teams:
Electronic Resources, Information Resources Management, and Information
Resources Advisory.

4. Administrative Responsibilities (15%)
a.      Participate in the management of the Library as a member of the
Coordinators Team.

5. Other work related duties as assigned (5%)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information studies program or equivalent credentials from a foreign institution.  Three or more years of recent library systems or technical services experience.
Minimum of three years of progressively responsible supervisory experience.  Thorough knowledge of current cataloging standards, tools, and practices.  Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated experience planning, coordinating, and implementing projects.  Experience with budgeting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with the Aleph integrated library system and other Ex Libris products.  Experience and knowledge of technologies and tools used in managing electronic information.  Knowledge of emerging technology and standards in technical services as well as experience with applications of technology to integrated library systems, bibliographic utilities, and the world wide web.  Strong commitment to excellent service.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Full-time, twelve-month, academic position.  Renewable contract, initial appointment is for three years.  Minimum salary of $54,135.
