As a member of the Libraries’ senior administrative team, participates in a wide range of administrative activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
ALA-accredited MLS required; a second post-baccalaureate degree is preferred.
Significant supervisory experience and experience in library technical services and automation is required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a collegial environment.

Collaborates with the Serials Team Leader in planning, setting goals and monitoring Serials Department work flows concerning the physical processing of print serials (including check-in, claiming, title maintenance and binding); solves complex problems that arise during the processing of serials resources; assists in managing the Serials Department staff’s creation and payment of serial orders and invoices within the Acquisitions module the Libraries’ Sirsi-Dynix integrated library system; assists in maintaining the serials records and data entry within the Serials module of the Libraries ILS system; participates in the training of Serials Department staff and student workers; maintains ongoing contacts with publishers and vendors; assists in the authentication, activation and maintenance of access to e-serials; keeps abreast of current trends, standards and developments in the serials industry regarding vendor-developed services, resources, automated systems and publishing models; participates in appropriate collection development and outreach activities as a library liaison to one or more academic departments; meets library and university requirements for promotion and tenure in the areas of librarianship, research, service and collegiality.

Minimum Qualifications ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS; familiarity with the serials trade and with current tools and trends in serials access and management; high level of familiarity with computers.

Position Title: Electronic Resources Librarian

Position Summary: This position will hold a leadership role in organizing and providing access to the library’s extensive electronic resources collection, (e-books, journals, and databases). Reporting to the Collections Development Officer, this position will be responsible for all aspects of the life cycle of e-resources, including coordinating the purchasing, licensing, access, and maintenance of all electronic materials. He or she will be expected to work cooperatively with serials, acquisitions and other departments across the library. This librarian will have overall responsibility for the library’s e-resources management system, Serials Solutions.

As a member of senior management this Associate Director reports to the Director of Libraries and plays a leadership role in library-wide planning, policy making, and development and evaluation of services.

Responsibilities: Plans and leads implementation of traditional, digital, and future services in cataloging, metadata, acquisitions, serials management, electronic resources licensing, and collection management; enhances service quality and operational efficiency; leads two department heads, eight faculty librarians, and twenty support staff; fosters effective working relationships with all constituents; contributes to system-wide planning and policy making; represents the Libraries in a wide range of consortia and partnerships at the state, regional, and national levels.

Qualifications: Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-Accredited institution and a minimum of seven years experience successfully

managing or supervising in an academic library post-MLS. Preferred:

Knowledge of and substantial operational experience in technical services, collections, and budgeting; knowledge of appropriate information technology applications such as Ex Libris, (ALEPH, SFX, MetaLib); knowledge of collections and technical services automation, issues, and current trends; substantial academic library experience in progressively more responsible positions; experience administering a major unit within a research library; demonstrated ability to effect change; supervisory experience and a management style that empowers others; ability to work well with a diverse community in a collegial manner; strong analytical and decision-making skills; experience with programming related to library management systems; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to represent the Libraries within the University and to external audiences at the state, regional, and national levels; record of scholarship and professional activities.

Loyola Marymount University offers librarians a supportive and innovative work environment. The new William H. Hanno Library opened in August 2009: http://library.lmu.edu. With a materials budget of $3.8 million, split almost evenly between print and electronic resources, the Acquisitions & Serials Department Head will lead 7 FTE staff in the procurement and management of all collection materials for the William H. Hannon Library. The department acquires 18,000 books annually and subscribes to 1800 print periodicals, 22,300 e-journals and over 200 e-resources. The Head manages the acquisitions, serials, and electronic resources functions of the library, including oversight of expenditures against the library’s materials budgets.

Other position specific accountabilities are as follows: Develop effective utilization of technology to streamline workflow and processes; manage personnel including training and development; establish effective vendor relationships; coordinate budgeting and financial management for library materials funds; and represent LMU at various conferences and meetings pertaining to library acquisitions and technologies.

The ideal candidate must have broad knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and the publishing industry, and an understanding of the issues of content ownership vs. access, including e-resource licensing. The successful candidate will be creative, flexible, and collaborative. Other skills and knowledge include: ability to analyze work processes and introduce appropriate technological solutions for efficiency and user convenience; strong financial management skill, and excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to win the trust and confidence of faculty, librarians, and library staff. Experience with these technologies preferred: Innovative Interfaces, Inc., Serials Solutions, and OCLC PromptCat.

A Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution is preferred, but a related master’s degree with appropriate experience may be substituted. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic library acquisitions and/or serials experience that includes supervision is required.

Hiring Salary: $59,880 to $80,000 commensurate with experience and salary history.
