Job Description: Design, implement and manage a broad range of information technology-based systems and services for the Client’s library. Involves global web portal maintenance and design, as well as a passion for helping to shape a 21st century corporate digital library.
 Responsible for ongoing maintenance of library servers and related technology to ensure 24/7 accessibility, functionality and stability for a global employee base. Routinely monitor overall performance and security of library systems, identifying and implementing modifications to deal with link rot, etc. Has primary responsibility for gathering, compiling and reporting on statistics of library-supported digital collections.
 
Will work with a highly collaborative team of librarians serving the entire company in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Will explore and report on emerging technologies as potential library applications, and must have the ability to handle research overflow as needed. Will provide regular and consistent updates to management on resolution of technical issues. Will work with management on long-term strategic plans for the ongoing development of digital technologies that keep pace with current standards.
 Must have developed web-based applications using LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP) based solutions. Will maintain and extend existing library applications as needed by library staff and end users. Website management includes knowledge of the MediaWiki content management system and involves content updating, template management, system upgrades and support and maintenance of internal encyclopedia of the client. Also requires interaction with our integrated library system vendor for upgrading and maintaining Sirsi Unicorn software.
 
 Job Qualifications:
    MLS in Library Science is required, as is extensive experience in systems librarianship and a strong curiosity for identifying and implementing cutting-edge software in the corporate environment.

  • Ability to work within a Linux command Shell environment is necessary.
  • Must be able to read, modify and alter Perl script programs as needed.
  • An understanding of basic tcp/ip networking, proxy servers, vpns and connectivity to systems outside the corporate firewall is required.
  • Knowledge of Wikipedia and MediaWiki syntax is a must.
  • An understanding of the MediaWiki backend system and configuration scripts, databases tables and extensions is required.
  • An understanding of Sirsi Unicorn OPAC configuration, reporting, cataloging and circulation wizards is required.
  • Excel skills are also required.
  • Must have 3 years of consecutive IT experience supporting library systems (academic or research)

Description of Work

The Cataloger/Metadata Specialist performs original and copy cataloging and creates MARC records in OCLC and Voyager ILS for State Library s Government and Heritage Library (GHL) and state agency libraries. Catalogs materials in varying formats (print, video, microfilm, electronic) using current cataloging rules and standards (AACR2, LCRI, MARC, local guidelines), LC and Dewey classification systems; and LCSH. Manages and coordinates cataloging services for state agency libraries; consults with agency librarians about cataloging needs and issues; creates Dublin Core metadata records for GHL digital collections in CONTENTdm; and assists in developing local metadata standards. Performs name and subject authority work; coordinates GHL s efforts to formalize North Carolina name/subject authorities with other NC libraries through NACO membership. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of professional library & information science principles, methods, & practices; current LC & OCLC policies, practices & standards; one or more major metadata standards; and trends, issues, & best practices in cataloging & metadata. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, & written communication skills; ability to provide training to other staff. Ability to effectively use technology, including CONNEXION Client and an integrated library system. Demonstrated ability to perform original & copy cataloging in various formats; appropriately apply cataloging rules & procedures; and perform authority verification. Ability to plan, organize, & establish priorities and projects, and establish & maintain effective working relationships with state agency libraries, and work independently and in a collaborative team environment. Aptitude for complex analytical work with attention to detail. Demonstrated problem solving skills & flexibility. Experience with NACO a plus.
