Legal Cataloger, Librarian - Washington, DC

LAC Seeks for *immediate consideration a Legal Cataloger - Librarian to work under contract at a Government Agency in Washington, DC. Responsibilities will include cataloging legal and other publications in the agency’s library. Must have at least 2 years of professional cataloging experience including copy and original cataloging in both print and non-print materials and extensive experience classifying legal materials using the Library of Congress “K” schedule. This position is subject to award.

Responsibilities

  • Catalog legal publications, Government publications, and publications on drug-related topics.
  • Catalog items to be entered into Voyager with associated MARC format holdings records.
  • Use OCLC to edit existing records or create new ones and work with agency staff for clarification of materials.
  • Use Voyager for original cataloging of restricted-access material.
  • Independently evaluate publications and recognize common circumstances which may indicate a restricted access publication without being prompted.
  • Research assigned cataloging against agency’s online library catalog.
  • Independently create new records for legal publications, US Government publications, drug-related publications, and other materials for various media types as assigned by agency’s library staff.
  • Review/Proofread newly created catalog records for OCLC and local Voyager ILS to ensure correct tagging, punctuation, spacing, and spelling to within a 98% accuracy rate.
  •  
  • Identify and solve cataloging problems which may arise and reporting problems to the Chief of Technical Services or Senior Cataloger for inclusion into Cataloging Procedure Manual.
  • Add barcode(s) to each physical entity for entry into ILS and create/edit MARC Format Holdings Records and item records.
  • Create and affix spine labels for publications to prepare them for circulation.


Qualifications

  • MLS Degree from an accredited ALA-Institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional cataloging experience including copy and original cataloging in both print and non-print materials.
  • Experience cataloging both monographs and serials.
  • Extensive knowledge and use of the OCLC cataloging utility.
  • Experience creating and/or editing bibliographic records using an ILS.
  • Experience applying LC Subject Headings and LC Classification numbers.
  • Experience using AACR2 rev. and LC Rule Interpretations (LCRI)
  • Experience using Voyager ILS is strongly preferred.
  • Extensive experience classifying legal materials using the Library of Congress “K” schedule.
  • Experience using on-line cataloging tools such as Cataloger’s Desktop and Classification Web.               
  • Recent graduates need not apply.

Manages a division of the TIMS Department (which creates and manages Ingram’s corporate metadata repositories).  This position is charged with the creation and management of the MARC based repository.

Responsibilities include managing professional and paraprofessional associates.  Hires, trains, and supervises more than 12 on-site associates and 10 or more telecommuters.  Plans and adjusts workflow ensuring that all critical deadlines are met and key deliverables are on target.  Records created by the department serve the library clients of Ingram Library Services, Ingram Digital Group, and Coutts Information Services.  Utilizing excellent communications and presentation skills, associate will serve as the “public face” of Ingram’s Cataloging Services and be a resource to customer service personnel of multiple departments.  Recommends and implements policies for bibliographic description and title classification based on knowledge of national standards and practices.


Basic Qualifications:
